45 Minute Workshop 2:10pm EST
Social Media Presenter Badge-45.jpg

Sewing has been marginalized by the engineering community as mere craft or art, and not a practice of "serious" engineers. But sewing engages students! Learning to sew helps with understanding measurement, adjusting to scale, materials science, attachment techniques, etc. Using sewing, including hand work, pattern creation & adaption, and focus on the impact of the sewing machine on industrial and economic history, creates an accessible on-ramp for many under-represented students in STEM, and also recognizes the role of women in everyday engineering problem solving for hundreds of years! In this session, I will share my sewing is engineering module and activities and participants can try a quick sewing demonstration themselves.
